Be the Captain for a Day – One of Lefkada's Best Experiences

If you ask us to recommend one unforgettable experience during your stay at Greek Beach House, this would be near the top of our list.

Rent a small motorboat and spend the day exploring the crystal-clear waters, hidden bays, and small islands surrounding Lefkada.

One of the wonderful things about Greece is that you can legally rent certain small motorboats without a skipper's license, provided the boat meets the legal requirements and the rental company approves the designated skipper. Before you leave, you'll receive a full safety briefing and instructions on how to operate the boat. Even if y

ou're not the skipper, it's worth listening carefully.

Most rentals begin around 09:00 (this is Greece, after all!) and the boats are usually returned between 17:00 and 18:00, depending on the rental company.

A perfect day on the water might include the famous Papanikolis Cave on Meganisi, the beautiful bays of Spilia, Vathy, Fanari, and Elia, and a cruise past Skorpios and Sparti (check with the owner how far you are allowed to go). Please remember that Skorpios is a private island, so landing there is not permitted.

A few tips from experience:

  • Bring plenty of drinking water (a thermal bottle or cooler bag is a great idea).

  • Pack your swimming gear, towels, hats, sunscreen, and a few snacks.

  • Plan to enjoy lunch at one of the waterfront tavernas around Meganisi.

  • If you bring alcoholic drinks, remember that the designated skipper must remain sober. The Port Police may carry out alcohol checks.

  • Cruise at a comfortable speed. Around 4,000 RPM is usually economical, quieter, and gives you a more relaxed ride.

  • Stay away from shallow water and obey all navigation signs. A damaged propeller can quickly become an expensive souvenir!

At Greek Beach House, we're lucky to have a boat rental company right next door, making it easy to arrange a day on the water. We're also happy to recommend Desimi Boats, Trident Boats, Lefkas Boats, and several other reputable operators around the island.

Trust us on this one.

Years after your holiday, you may not remember every beach you visited—but you'll almost certainly remember the day you became the captain of your own boat and discovered Lefkada from the sea.
